History of Scouting in SA
The South Africa Scout Association (SASA) has had a rather interesting history, mainly due to apartheid. There were originally 4 different Scout Associations in South Africa (All governed by the same Chief Scout). These 4 were: The Boy Scouts Association, The African Boy Scouts Association, The Coloured Boy Scouts Association and The Indian Boy Scouts Association. The reason for this division was largely due to the political situation in South Africa at that time.
On 2 July 1977 the four parallel associations were replace by a single association : the "Boy Scouts of South Africa". This was one of the first associations in South Africa that accepted boys of all races and creeds into it's membership ranks.
In 1995 the "Boy Scouts of South Africa" were replaced with the "South African Scout Association", and it began accepting Girls into it's ranks.
Ex-President Nelson Mandela is the SASA's official Patron.
